Museums in Motion Brings African American History to Berry

by Cecilia P., Jag Rag staff writer

One day you and your family decide to visit a museum, hunting for some educational fun. You begin to remember the last time you went to the museum on a school field trip. You remember being squished as you and hundreds of other students cram the halls of the museum and having to push through masses of people just to get a glimpse of the items on display. Instead of suffering all the troubles that can come with traveling to a museum, whether it’s near or far, why not bring the museum to you?

That’s the concept behind Museums in Motion, a traveling museum exhibit that is making its home at Berry Middle School this week. In honor of Black History month, the exhibit focuses on African American firsts. The exhibit opened Monday in the media center and will run through Friday.

According Berry principal Dr. Robbins, the purpose of Museums in Motion, which is based in New Jersey, is “to take museums or a specific museum and bring that museum into the schools.” Students from all grade levels and all academic teams will get an opportunity to tour the museum.

A few of the great African American firsts that students will have the opportunity to learn about include Vivian Malone Jones, the first African American to graduate from the University of Alabama; Daniel Hale Williams, the first African American to successfully perform an open heart surgery and founder of the first hospital with an interracial staff, and The Jackson 5, the first African American group to debut with four consecutive number one hits on the Billboard charts.
