Energy bounces around the Berry Middle School gym. Feet stomp and hands clap in rhythm and chants and cheers erupt from the bleachers. Music blares from the instruments of the band, and noise reaches a deafening level as Berry sports teams run triumphantly across the gym floor. This enthusiastic show of school spirit can only mean one thing -- it’s pep rally time!

Berry recently held its first Spirit Week and pep rally of the school year, using the occasion to raise awareness for the Hope for Autumn Foundation, which assists families battling childhood cancer and supports research for innovative cancer treatments. As with all spirit weeks, each day of the week was dedicated to a different dress-up day. Monday was fittingly Go for Gold Day since gold is the color used to promote awareness of pediatric cancer. Tuesday had students decked out in togas. Wednesday saw students dressed as their favorite Disney characters. On Thursday, students were dressed in black from head to toe for Blackout Childhood Cancer, and on Friday, students looked like they had just rolled out of bed for Pajama Day.

Sixth-grade students were especially excited to attend their first-ever middle-school pep rally. Nyelle Keller, a student on 6-1, said, “Cheer...dance…they were all amazing!” 6-3 student Taylor Orr said her two older brothers, who also attend Berry, had told her that pep rallies at Berry were wild and exciting, and that her first pep rally definitely met those expectations.
While pep rallies may not be new to most seventh and eighth graders, students in those grades still enjoyed cheering and showing their school spirit. Briana Faison on Team 7-3 said the pep rally was fun and helped raise awareness at Berry about childhood cancer.
